Summative Entry:

Good evening fellow bloggers. What a joy it is to taste the sweet end to a bitter semester. This semester has been quite a rollercoaster. We began this unit of American Literature, by being introduced to the Native American sense of importance that nature has, and how it can make our lives more whole and meaningful seems to have been lost. I really enjoyed learning about this in the first week as I feel very connected the topic of nature. It is one of my passions as I aspire to be as disconnected to the planned standard human life as possible.

This topic then swiftly moved on to the concept of Transcendentalism and Emerson and Thoreau. I did not score as highly as I hoped on the essay (I chose the Transcendentalist question), however this was my favourite concept that has been presented in literature thus far. For these eminent men to reject the stereotypical life is refreshing and inspiring. I connected to this idea the most and conducted my own further reflection and research on the concept only to be faced with a new perspective on life. As mentioned in my blog for this week, I found it humorous at first when Jess suggested we move to Byron Bay and grow vegetables. However, the more I thought about it, the more desirable it sounded.

As the weeks went on, we were introduced to Emily Dickinson and her interesting style of poetry. I was particularly inspired by her idiosyncrasies in: Im Nobody! Who are you?

I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

That week I had a stab at creating my own poem and thoroughly enjoyed it. It allowed me to be more creative (something I struggle with constantly) and even inspired me to start thinking of ideas for my other English unit, Creative Non-Fiction. So thank you Michael for allowing us creative freedom!

Huckleberry Finn followed after that week and I decided to do another critical piece. Unfortunately, I did not finish that novel which is why I believe I felt disconnected to the blog topics and the tutorials and lecture. I did what I knew I was good at- analysing- and decided to take a paragraph and show the rich language Twain uses to describe nature.

Du Bois and his reflection on Racism showed that the color – line that he spoke of is controversial as many racist White Americans do not want to consider the thought that they may have “black” descendants. This is a constant issue in society and I don’t believe it will ever be resolved sadly, however I was glad it was touched on in class.

From Du Bois, we were then introduced to the famous poems by Frost and Lowell. Again I attempted to connect more with my creative side and wrote another poem! Shocked? Me too. It again, boosted my confidence and allowed me to warm up to my creative side.

I felt as though Ezra Pound’s In a Station of the Metro, connected well with Transcendentalism as Pound elevated nature above the usual ‘going through the motions’ outlook that humans have on life. This two line poem was enjoyable as I likened it to Emerson and Thoreau’s works.

As I Lay Dying, another interesting text was quite fun to analyse in the 3pm class with Jess. I noticed many people were puzzled that someone wanted to base a book about a mother watching her son build her coffin? Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it as much as some of the other texts that we analysed although it did blend well with the other concepts we had been introduced to from other authors and artists.

We then moved on to Ginsberg and Beat! Holy, Holy, Holy! What an interesting man! There is still some confusion on the question I asked in my blog that week… No one offered their opinions! I felt as though it was a brilliant second last week of the semester and Holy! I hope I don’t come across a semester like this again.

Overall I enjoyed this unit, although I feel that Australian Literature was probably my most favoured (so far!). I connect well to the ideas presented about nature in all units we study, and I believe that this is why the Transcendental concept has been the most interesting for me in this unit!

Hopefully I will see you all next semester with more interesting ideas and concepts introduced to us in literature!

Ginsberg

Holy! Holy! Holy! Is one way to describe Footnote to Howl. Allen Ginsberg took our tutorial class on a fifty minute journey of analysing literature on Friday. Talk of blasphemy and worship was the big debate. Did this text intend to be so controversial? Our verdict: yes.

The tongue, cock, hand, and asshole shocked us as we began immersing ourselves into this text. My initial thought- “How dare he call these things Holy?”. After listening to multiple views from different classmates I realised then that these body parts should be called Holy. God created mankind in his image, meaning every inch of us is Holy. It is the acts that we indulge ourselves in such as gossip and lies, violence, and rape that make us unholy. I am confused, and would encourage any fellow bloggers to leave their ideas in the comments below on why the “jazz bands marijuana hipsters peace & junk & drums” and “…fourth dimension holy the fifth International holy the Angel in Moloch” are Holy? Besides that line I can vaguely see where Ginsberg is coming from by deeming all else Holy.

Peer Review Eight:

Danielle! What a wonderful blog. I have read a few blogs on this particular question and it is so interesting to see how people take it. The only thing I could pick up on was a slight awkwardness in the repetition of another in: “…like our tongues and brains and hearts all mimic one another in some way or another.” Other than that fantastic blog, and keep up the amazing work 🙂 !

Nadia. The line; “The hardships we all endure in some point of our lives play a significant role in our consciousness’ and our determination to succeed in life, learn and reach our potential.” from your text spoke to me. I agree with your ideas and I believe that every hardship I have encountered has made me into the person I am today and makes me want to succeed in life. Recently I had an issue with a tutor and it made me realise how desperately I wanted to be a teacher, to write that tutors wrongs! I know your hard work will pay off, loved your blog!!!! 🙂

As I Lay Dying

I am so excited to get my boyfriend this pair of shoes. It is a shame he can’t try them on. What if his foot has grown in the past 6 months? Will he like them? I can’t show them to him. It is a shame I can’t take a picture with me when I go to visit him. Off memory he is a size 10 and likes the colour white. He doesn’t seem to have changed his style. You see, thats the funny part. My boyfriend is in prison. He can’t change out of uniform. It was only a minor crime. Armed robbery. Minimum sentence is 5 years. It will fly by. So far I have been buying him something small every month. I hope that when he gets out he’ll appreciate it. It is a way of showing my love, affection and loyalty. He’ll be in my arms soon.

That small paragraph there was based on a lady who I served around 3 weeks ago at my store. She bought her boyfriend a pair of white shoes and was concerned about our refund policy. She later told me it was because her partner was getting out of jail that weekend. They had a child who seemed unaffected by this as he/she (I can’t remember the gender) looked around 3-4 years old. I found it was quite an interesting encounter and that is why it inspired me to write this small paragraph.

Ezra Pound

At first, In a Station of the Metro, was the hardest text I had ever read. That includes Jane Austen’s Emma in my junior years. I remember being stuck on the word ‘vexed’ for ten minutes before finally looking it up. It wasn’t the language however, that Pound has vexed me with. It is the vague and ambiguous meaning behind this poem.

“The apparition of these faces in the crowd;

Petals on a wet, black bough”.

I chose to deconstruct this poem because I enjoy the challenge. As mentioned in his previous work, Pound believes that “It is better to present one Image in a lifetime than to produce voluminous works.” This is reflected in this poem as Pound uses two lines to produce one of the most famous poems in literature and the Modernism era. For me, the symbol presented evokes images of a wet cherry blossom blossom branch, contrasted with vibrant pink petals. This is juxtaposed by the apparition of faces – plural- showing that, for me, these humans walking around the metro surviving but not living, are insignificant to the nature that can feel! The choice of wet shows that ‘these faces in the crowd’ are merely faces, not individuals. This poem speaks to me as I feel as though Pound and I have the same views on human kind. If I have interpreted this poem correctly (perhaps there is no correct way?), it would mean that both Pound and I understand that the human race is becoming more consumed in a ‘standard’ way of living. As humans, we are conditioned to go to school, proceed to university, dedicate ourselves to applying for a stable job/ career and then die. We might be lucky if we get married and have kids too. These apparitions of faces in the Metro are ‘going through the motions’ and are not living or feeling.

Poems about Healing

Stopping by the woods…

Another creative! Im sure by now my usual followers are shocked that I have done TWO CREATIVE blog topics.

Whose woods these are I think I know

The Nature that surrounds me puts on a show

The Divine one is present here

And asserts his power through the threatening snow.

Around my city many think I’m odd

But I continue to push my horse to trod

Through these beautiful woods that I allow myself

To be immersed in, as I appreciate them and give a little nod.

A strange black bough sticks out from the ground

I’m shocked to see what my eyes have found.

An almost melted patch of ice

Reveals to me the green grass and mud mound!

The sun begins to melt the cold

The winter keeps stories untold

I am worried to see what the sun will unfold

I am worried to see what the sun will unfold.

Peer Review Six:

I feel as though you really answered the question thoroughly in this blog! Thank you for a different perspective on the question. This is my favourite thought that you shared: “What they see, beyond all, is that the white civilization consists not of greater consciousness but only of mutilation and abuse disguising itself as a culture.” Keep up the great work 🙂

Du Bois

Unfortunately today, racism is still explicitly present throughout the world. This powerful quote  “The problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line” allowed our tutorial class to contemplate this confrontative issue, as it usually is swept under the rug. I believe that this quote not only refers to the fact that White Americans were not the first humans in America, but also there has been so much history, it is difficult to say who is “white” and who is “black”.

The color – line that Du Bois speaks of is controversial as many racist White Americans do not want to consider the thought that they may have “black” decedents. It is obvious that Du Bois critically examines the question of what does this colour line mean in the 20th century? What is its effect? I feel as though Du Bois answers this by questioning it. It seems as though people in society are almost ashamed of their race however it we are to progress as a species, we must understand the social forces that modify our ages.
